Tax preparation cost

What tax preparation costs in Jersey City, and how our fixed quote works

Most people just want to know the price before they hand over their documents. We quote a fixed price in writing based on your actual paperwork, and this page explains what moves that number so you can compare preparers fairly.

The Short Answer

Why we do not publish a single price

A single W-2 filer with no extras and a Jersey City commuter with a bonus, RSUs, two states and a rental are not the same job, so any one number would be wrong for one of them. Instead, you send us last year's return and this year's forms, and we give you a fixed price in writing before any work begins. It does not grow because you had a question or because a form turned up later.

We would rather be upfront about how pricing works than quote a low number that rises once you are committed. If you are comparing preparers, use the factors below to make sure you are comparing the same scope.

What Moves Your Quote

The factors that make one return more work than another

01

Number of income sources

One W-2 is simple. Several W-2s, 1099s, equity compensation and investment statements take longer to reconcile.

02

States involved

A New Jersey-only return is quicker than a commuter filing. See our New York nonresident return preparation.

03

Self-employment income

Schedule C work needs expenses reviewed and estimated payments planned. See our accountant for freelancers and 1099 contractors.

04

Rental property and other schedules

Rental income, a vacation rental or foreign accounts each add forms and checks.

05

Business returns

LLC, S-corp and partnership returns depend on entity type, books and number of owners. See business tax preparation in New Jersey.

06

Condition of your records

Organized books are cheaper to file from. Catch-up work is usually scoped separately, often alongside bookkeepers in Jersey City.

Comparing Preparers

How to choose a tax preparer, whatever you pay

  • Ask for the price in writing before you hand over documents.
  • Be cautious about any preparer who bases a fee on the size of your refund.
  • Paid preparers must sign the return and include their PTIN. Do not sign a blank return.
  • Ask who will actually prepare and who will review your return.
  • Ask whether the preparer is available after April for notices and planning questions.

We offer a fixed quote, a second reviewer on every return and year-round access. You can read how we work on our Jersey City accountant page or see the full list of tax services in Jersey City.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does tax preparation cost in Jersey City?+
It depends on your income sources, the states you file in, any self-employment or rental income and the condition of your records. We give you a fixed price in writing after seeing your actual documents.
Is your price fixed, or do you bill by the hour?+
Fixed. The quote does not grow because you had a question or because you added a form, as long as the scope matches what we agreed.
Does adding a second state raise the price?+
It changes the scope, so it is reflected in the quote, but you see the number before work starts. Commuter returns are routine for us.
Can you give me a price without seeing my documents?+
A reliable price needs real documents. Last year's return plus this year's forms is usually enough for a quote.
What should I send to get a quote?+
Last year's federal and state returns, this year's W-2s, 1099s and any statements for investments, rentals or foreign accounts.
